All things being equal, I’d rather own shares that the hedge funds haven’t discovered yet. When they head for the exits, they do so en masse and it isn’t pretty, as we saw during the Great Deleveraging.
It’s better to hold value securities where the hedge funds are minimally involved. Who wants to get trampled by a herd of elephants when someone shouts “fire” in the crowded market?
Here are a few commodity producers that didn’t, thank goodness, make the above list: Arc Resources Limited, Canadian Oil Sands Limited, Canadian Natural Resources, Eni, Impala Platinum, Imperial Oil, Penn West Ltd, Vermilion Energy Inc. Long all of the above.
